Yesterday was the official 'Move-in' Day at Baylor. It is amazing all the logistics that go into creating a successful move in for 2800 students in one day. I was in charge of traffic directing at one of the residence halls. Fairly uneventful, just marking the cars with the correct 'unloading' zone and making sure they were headed in the right direction. As each car passed by, I asked if they were in North or South Russel. My favorite response was from a gentleman in a nice little sports car. When I asked him my usual, "Are you moving into North or South Russel?" his response to that question (with a smile) was, "I don't know what a 'Russel' is. I took the wrong exit off of the highway and need to get back on." I laughed for quite awhile. Talk about a wrong exit...this poor guy ended up in a line up of 100s of freshman girls, waiting to get into their new residence hall.
Another favorite moment was sitting outside toward the end of the day (not for long in the 105 degree weather) and watching the awkwardness unfold around me. All the new students milling around with their new roommates, parents getting ready to say good-bye and trying to hold in their tears, and students not knowing what to do with their parents. Sigh. I can remember those moments when I started at Colorado State and at George Fox. My encouragement is to embrace the awkwardness...it is bound to happen so we might as well embrace it, right?
