New Year's Resolutions 2007

It is that time again for making resolutions for the new year. I was reading through some of my resolutions from last year, and see that they probably need to be continued into this year...I have a smaller appreciation for Texas, but that is probably due to Josh and that he is helping me to see the brighter side of the Lonestar State! I'll keep at it though, I do have at least 5 more months of living in Waco!

The biggest resolution for me this year is to stop using a snooze button on my alarm. Now, I know this might sound like a simple resolution, but you need to understand my love for sleep in order to know why this is a significant change. I love sleeping in. I feel a bit lazy doing it (thus a new year resolution) but something in my brain does not quite click with the sound of my alarm. I make so many great plans as I am setting the alarm the night before. I think to myself that it would be most beneficial to get up an extra 30 minutes early to eat a good breakfast, perhaps go for a walk, do some reading or journaling, and just get ready in time that does not make me feel (or look) in a frenzy. All of that sounds completly reasonable as I set my alarm at night.

However, at the sound of the alarm in the morning, all logic escapes from my brain, and suddenly walks and breakfast and looking somewhat decent for work is downgraded for just 9 more minutes of sleep. Is that really gonna make a difference anyway? Nine minutes...probably not. But, if you hit snooze several times, it adds up quickly...and so I find myself up with 15 minutes to get ready, eat breakfast, make lunch, do some quiet reading, go for a walk, and feel good about the day.

So, starting tomorrow, with the start of my final semester of classes, I will no longer be hitting the snooze button. I resolve to get up upon the first ring of the alarm and become a morning person...

...And I thought last year's resolution was going to be difficult.

geesh! That's a toughy! A bit of advice...Nate and I have found that starting work at 6:15 AM will make you a morning person REALLY fast! Unfortunately you don't have much of yourself left past 9pm! So this doesn't seem to fit a grad-students schedule....perhaps you will capture the art of the 5 min. power nap?
