Reflections on the semester

One of the beautiful things about returning to school is that I have the opportunity to have my life divided into semesters. This may seem strange, but in reality it is nice to have some clearly defined beginnings and endings in my life. The semester is finished. A quick reflection on some of the things I've learned is what you get in this blog...feel free to skim! :)

More than anything, I would say that I am leaving this semester a huge advocate of the graduate program that I am a part of. When I started, I was simply doing it because I knew I needed a Master's to get a job in the field of Student Services. It was a means for an end. But as I have read books, taken classes, written papers, and started to understand the depth of this field and the academy as a whole, I am beginning to realize how imperative it really is to be here learning the things I am learning. I feel as though I have a better understanding of the academy as a whole (not just the student services side of university life), I have learned some of the theories that are the foundation for the study of student services, and I have started understanding the complexity of working for a place as complicated as a university. I have also discovered that this is exactly where I need to be, that I love working with college students in a university setting, and that God has put me here in this place for a reason and for that I am very thankful.

The people I have met here have made my experience a great one. The people in my cohort are beginning to mesh better, and I absolutely love everyone in my office. It just goes to show that a place is not what matters, it is always the people that make something great!

So how's your semester been? (even if you aren't in school anymore...sometimes it's fun to pretend!)
